I'm thinking of hosting my site at 1and1.com, and im getting a little confused from the difference...
What's the difference between Web Hosting and Domain names?
You need domain name like www.yourname.com . But you need webhosting to publish your webpages.
If you like to create websites (usually you will end up more than 1 website, I got more than 100 websites in about 6 months' time), go for multiple web hosting services where you could host all your websites in one account.
I would like to suggest following webhosting which I use, they are excellent.
Hostmonster http://www.hostmonster.com/track/ryukend...
They offer hosting of "unlimited domains" and you will get massive webspace of 300000 MB (300 GB ). They only charge $5.95/month and they offer "a free Domain Name" and installing service called "Fantastico". By using Fantastico, you could create own forum, photo gallery, shopping cart (e-commerce),your own auction site and your own blogs within few seconds. They also offer "Free Website Builder" as well.
Visit the site to check details.

Following site is quite good to register domains as price is reasonable with free privacy. Some charge about $5/ year just for free privacy.

What's the difference between Web Hosting and Domain names?
a domain name is something like www.google.ca
web hosting is when a company hosts your website for you (all of your files pictures) and provides you with a certain amount of bandwidth.
hope it helps
Reply:Hosting is where you put the files that are your webpage
A domain name is an icon so to speak that points to that hosted webpage
for example
the webpage may be hosted at
lunarpages.com
you are given a free domain name
so you register the name gimli.com
you would upload your webpage to the area you have purchased http://gimli.com
in this case the web files are hosted at gimli.com where the domain is
now lunar pages allows you add on domains
say you purchase a domain name elsewhere ( less cost or convenience of having them all in one place)
you can have an add on domain to save money at lunar pages
say you purchase the domain name
manitoba.com
you could set up an add on domain
at lunarpages
off your main account
manitoba.gimli.com ( i think. it is basically a subdomain)
you would buy the name www.manitoba,com ( if available)
the website could be posted elsewhere ( for cost or convenience of hosting)
the name manitoba.com %26gt; can be pointed to the place where it is hosted ( a good tech support at the hosting company will tell you how)
it used to be that hosting companies wanted you to sign up to transfer your domain name over for them to handle.
not so now
lastly you might be able to get a free hosting service ( such as your isp , or school)
might be a long url
you can get a domain name and redirect it there
people can either type the long url or the domain name ( or several domain names ) it is just an icon
you can get free domain name at
dot.tk http://www.dot.tk/en/index.html ends in tk
it would be
Reply:Hi,
Web Hosting means, putting anything on internet.
Domain names means name of the website like ... www.yahoo.com
Web space means, the amount of space you buy online to put your website (webpages). If you want to have a lot of data on your website you need bigger webspace.
Reply:You want to know the difference between domain names and web hosting, right?
In a very simple, layman鈥檚 explanation, I would use a very simple comparison.
Web hosting can be compared to let say your house or apartment. That's the place were you store most if nor all of your stuff.
A web host provider will enable you to store your web site with all your web pages and files depending on how much space you get with the plan you chose. For more information about web hosting you can click on the link: http://www.your-inforcom.com/BasicInform...
On the other hand a domain name is like the physical address for your home or apartment, that's how your friends and visitors can be able to identify your place.
A domain name will make it possible for us to identity a given web site, same way you were able to identify and get to yahoo answers. For more information on domain names you can click on the link: http://www.your-inforcom.com/registerado...
Reply:an example of a domain name yahoo.com, you get them at http://www.LocoDomains.com , hosting is so people can see your website, you get it at http://www.JuicyHosting.com
Reply:Domain name is what users type into the address bar to get to your website. There is usually a yearly fee for registering domains. Webhosting is a server that stores your website files and sends them to people when they visit your website. There is usually a monthly fee for webhosting. You can get both at http://www.doggydomains.com They have hosting for $5.95 a month and you can get a domain for $1.99 when you get the hosting.
