I've been to free web hosting sites like Awardspace, Free Hostia, Jaywebdesigns and Bytehost. I was just wondering what sites like these gain from offering free webhosting?
You can look up their features in http://www.free-webhosts.com . That's where I usually look for free hosting.
I can't help but wonder why they offer their free hosting at all.
I have a few answeres in my mind too like:
* them offering to attract more customers to their paid hosting (free hostia and awardspace)
* getting more traffic to their site (jaywebdesigns and bytehost)
But tendency is, I don't really mind any of the following reasons above. And I don't really intend on upgrading my plan any time soon.
Btw, the sites above don't put ads all over your site and does not require forum posting. I recommend them too.
Sorry for being a person pointing at the obvious but I was asked by someone this question kanina eh and I didn't know what to say.
So, can anyone please explain this to me?
What do free web hosts gain from offering free web hosting??
Usually, the free web hosting services will earn by placing advertisements in the pages developed by you. The hosting service earns money when ever your pages are surfed by the end users.
Also the free web hosting offers only limited features like limited size or bandwidth usage etc, tempting the web site developer to go for premium service.

Reply:In some cases, smaller hosts are actually individuals who have bought hosting/bandwidth themselves and have more then they need.
Reply:There are a number of reasons why some offer free web hosting:
1. It is a good way to generate branding and customer awareness of their brand -- they know people are looking for free hosting, and offering their product for free is a way to get the word out about their business.
2. Free webhosting but earn through advertising -- the more common business model of many especially the big sites such as Yahoo Geocities. Give them free hosting, but earn through advertising from their site. A great advertising model because they don't have to create the content or worry about getting traffic - they simply put the ads and earn from you without even giving you a percent of the revenue earned from the ads
3. The give-away lure -- Give free hosting in the hope that these people will sign up for the paid hosting later on when they get more experience on web publishing or online business. Afterall, it is harder to transfer all the contents of the website as well as the learning curve in shifting to another host than simply upgrading from free to paid hosting service.
