Say you stumble upon a website xyz.com and they are very cool and very fast response. You love it. You want to find which hosting company hosting their website and what type of content management system they might be using. Of course, without asking them.
The reason for not asking them directly is sometimes you want to surprise (say your prospective employer).
How to find web hosting company of a website?
You can find the host by going to netcraft.com and entering the name the "What's that site running" box. Check the 'site report' when it comes back.
As for a CMS or other software, it's a crap shoot. You find find some indentifying information in the source code (right click - view source).

Go to network Solutions at netsol.com
go to whois and type in the domain name.
From there you can see with whom they are hosting with.
