DNS setting for local web hosting?
Very easy method...
In your
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc you will find a file named "hosts"
Put an entry in it like so:
192.168.1.20 www.example.com
Substitute the IP with the IP you want to mimic sending dns to www.exampel.com to.
That's all their is to it.
Your computer tries hosts file first. Please note, this will only work for the computer you are testing FROM. You can't use it to redirect websites on your webserver. It just saves you making changes to your DNS zone files for testing purposes.

Looking for good free web hosting, can anyone suggest any please? <20mb is plenty?
I've got an angelfire account, it's pretty naff but is there much better for free? I'm only hosting a small collection of specialist stories and a few photos per page. The whole site will be no more than 10mb, however ads interfere with the look of it. Can anyone point me to anything better? I know Geocities exist as well, not so great either. Thanks for any help. Failing this, very very cheap hosting perhaps.

Has anyone else had problems with a hosting provider called I-websolutions? My website was not viewable sometimes for weeks on end, even though it had been working for a couple of days once I registered. Multiple tickets had been raised, frontpage extensions was reinstalled loads of times etc
I complained because of this, and got abused by their customer services department, I managed to get ones month refund, which wasnt the full amount. And now they wont let me transfer my domain name away from them (I had been with them for other 90days)

Thirdly and most importantly from your point of view, THEY CANNOT REFUSE TO TRANSFER YOUR DOMAIN NAME. I have been using UK2.net for the past 5 years and have NEVER had cause to complain, currently they are hosting 6 websites for me and they hold 15 domain names I have registered. If I-Websolutions continue to give you grief, may I suggest that you contact BBC Watchdog, and threaten them with this, as well as with the press. Free domains are not really possible since it costs money to register a domain. If you are willing to pay a nominal fee then http://www.godaddy.com would be your best option.
There are a couple of alternatives though, if you don't mind advertisement on your site Microsoft Office Live Basics offers a free domain http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/office... The only catch is that it will include their logo and link to their service on your site. They are hoping to snag a large share of the market by offering a free domain, hosting and 500MB of storage. It will require a credit card to verify your age.
You can also visit http://www.dot.tk/ and register a free domain but it will end in .tk rather than .com.
You could also try a free Web hosting site like http://www.freewebs.com and then use http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ to get a free sub domain. It will redirect the URL to your site without a long difficult Web address.

I already have a host but it has PHP5. People told me that the wordpress software works best with PHP4. For some reason, I can't upload pictures and archives to WordPress because of this. They told me that PHP5 has some problems so I'm searching for a provider that has PHP4 or at least has the option to downgrade from PHP5 to PHP4.
The requirements for WordPress (I need) are:

Chilly Domains - web hosting, has anyone else had problems with them?
Last August I was looking for a cheap hosting solution for a one page website, and chose these cowboys.
I have never been able to upload a single page to my alloctated domain, and each time I emailed them I was informed. 'Our engineers have rectified the problem.'
In the end I just told them to get lost and used another hosting service.
But now, despite my pointing out that I could never access their services they are threatening me with debt collectors unless I pay up. It's only a small amount, so they have added another year on for not cancelling by registered letter, although I did cancel by email, the same way I signed up.
I have a whole file of emails to them asking for help to access my domain, but never had a satisfactory reply.
I cannot believe I'm the only one to have problems with them.
Any advice appreciated.

We want a scalable solution that is affordable but robust enough to handle an sharp increase in demand.
1) Performance - We want our hosting to be able to scale quickly to handle an increase in traffic.
2) Email - We will be sending our members critical event notification emails that we don't want listed as SPAM. Anything we can do in the hosting environment to improve this would be great.
3) Security - We don't have full-time staff, so it would be great if more of the IT maintenance / updates / monitoring that can be done by the hosting provider.
4) Cost - we have a limited budget, and we can't get into a long-term contract.

Someone I know wants to create a website to sell her jewellery. eBay, is NOT an option. I am with 1%26amp;1 myself on the basic package and would not recommend that to her. Guys, remember.... "best" website hosting should NOT be determined by cost! You get what you pay for! Although 1%26amp;1, Godaddy, and all the others list huge benefits, and low cost - they are going for QUANTITY, NOT QUALITY. If you are paying, for example, $2/month and the server that you website is on goes down - do you think that they are really going to care what you have to say? Its only $2 to them.
On the flip side, I've been with http://www.DependableHost.net, and have nothing but good things to say. They've had 100% uptime for a year %26amp; and half now. They give all the features you'd ever want, and the customer support is awesome! Often have an answer is less than 3 minutes!

Guys, remember.... "best" website hosting should NOT be determined by cost! You get what you pay for! Although 1%26amp;1, Godaddy, and all the others list huge benefits, and low cost - they are going for QUANTITY, NOT QUALITY. If you are paying, for example, $2/month and the server that you website is on goes down - do you think that they are really going to care what you have to say? Its only $2 to them.
On the flip side, I've been with http://www.DependableHost.net, and have nothing but good things to say. They've had 100% uptime for a year %26amp; and half now. They give all the features you'd ever want, and the customer support is awesome! Often have an answer is less than 3 minutes!

Reply:I would recommend NOT registering your domain and hosting your website with the same company as it puts your domain at risk in a few different ways, especially if your relationship with the company sours. For example, if you decide to host your website elsewhere, they may give you a lot of run around about making the necessary changes to your domain, or about allowing you to transfer the domain to a different registrar.
Also, if they decide to cancel your HOSTING account for any reason, eg someone reports your website as being offensive (without proving it is) or lapse in payment, they may also take your DOMAIN hostage and try to resell it to you for hundreds or thousands.
In fact, with some registrars, you may not even own the domain you register, which they will only point out to you when you attempt to transfer it to a different registrar.
With all that said, I use Domainsite.com for all my domains (over 50).
For hosting I would recommend Dreamhost.com.

cheap web hosting and domain name services will likely be alot more unreliable than more established web hosting and also will have a meagre bandwidth limit that may cause problems if you get a decent amount of traffic.

Another good site I bought another domain on was www.1and1.com
Both are pretty cheap. 1and1 is nice because they offer free privacy when you register through them. Yahoo! charges around $9.99 or so.
As for hosting...
I bought my hosting through ehost.net and it was on eBay...I got a great plan and I saw some places charging at least $10-$30 dollars a month for the plan I got for $10 for a year. I am happy so far with the hosting, no problems at all. I highly recommend them!

Neither one. Though I can say I've hosted on GoDaddy and found the experience a severe disappointment.
Check out HostGator... using the cPanel and Fantastico interface, you can auto-install a store based on eCommerce or ZenCart with just a couple of mouse clicks...
